Open Mainframe Summit

As you might imagine, the Open Mainframe Summit is all about…well, mainframes.

It’s hosted by the Linux Foundation’s Open Mainframe Project, and is backed by such heavy hitters as Broadcom, SUSE, Micro Focus, IBM (of course), and others.

While it’s easy to think that mainframes are a part of tech’s past, that’s just not true. Not only are big enterprises still using them, the number of mainframes in service continues to grow. In fact, here in the 2020s the sale of mainframes remains an important part of IBM’s business.

It might also be easy to think that a mainframe conference doesn’t deserve being on the pages of an open source site such as FOSS Force. Again, not true. These days a huge majority of mainframes are running Linux — as well as Kubernetes and other open source software.

According to the Linux Foundation, the summit offers an opportunity for different types of “mainframers” (their word, not ours) – “from students to hobbyists, seasoned professionals to new engineers, developers, and educators,” they say – to share best practices, discuss hot topics, learn technical insight from the best, and network with like-minded individuals who are passionate about the mainframe industry.

It’s also, of course, an opportunity for IBM to try to sell some mainframes, and for software vendors to demonstrate what their software can do for the platform.

This year’s event will be hybrid, meaning the entire event will be live streamed for those who’d rather watch from home.

If your company or organization will be hosting a Linux or open source-focused event, let us know about it by submitting it to FOSS Force’s Events Calendar. No matter how large or small, from local users group meetings to large conferences, we want to help you get out the word. Submit your event using our convenient online form.
