In April, shortly before the newly independent VMware sold itself to Broadcom, CEO Raghu Raghuram announced that after 18 years its popular VMworld conference was rebranding itself as VMware Explore with a new tagline: “Welcome to the Center of the Multi-Cloud Universe.”

“I’m super excited about VMware Explore 2022,” VMware CEO Raghu Raghuram said in a statement. “It’s going to be a unique event — a ‘gathering of the tribes’ for the multi-cloud community. I can’t wait to welcome all the innovators who are leading the way in defining the multi-cloud era, including our customers, our ecosystem partners and influencers from around the world.”

We guess this was about as good a time as any to play a switcheroo with the branding, considering that there hasn’t been a VMworld since 2019 due to the pandemic. It also might be a chance for any longtime VMware people who haven’t left yet to convince their new owners to give the company some breathing room least they suffocate it. Since the acquisition was announced there’s been a spate of exits from the company — especially from open source folks.

Recently, Craig McLuckie and Joe Beda, two of the three guys behind the development of Kubernetes at Google, and co-founders of the Kubernetes-focused startup Heptio (who ended up at VMware after it acquired their company in 2018) walked out the door. Back in January, before Broadcom got involved, Linus Torvald’s friend Dirk Hohndel resigned after spending nearly six years as the company’s Chief Open Source Officer. He told FOSS Force that he’d accomplished what he’d set out to do there.

It appears that this will be an interesting conference. We’re making popcorn for this one.

In the meantime, you can check out the VMware Explore website.
