Boston-Based FSF Could Use a Few Volunteers on August 11

FSF’s big summer fundraiser is over and it’s now time for rolling up the sleeves to get those orders shipped!

One of the houses that Stallman built — in this case Boston-based Free Software Foundation and not the Gnu Foundation — is looking for a few volunteers to help them do some packing and shipping. As you might’ve heard, on Monday the FSF wrapped-up its summer fundraiser, where it made bunches of cool items available online to put some money in the bank so the organization can continue to do what it does to keep software — and tech in general — free.

With that being over, it’s now time to wrap ‘n ship, and that’s where you come in — if you happen to live in vicinity of Bean Town and have some time on your hands.

“People around the world are eagerly waiting to receive their GNU Press shop orders, and we need your help sending everything out,” Anush Veeranala proclaimed on the FSF website on Wednesday. “If you haven’t signed up yet, would you be willing to donate a little of your time to support the FSF’s work, while chatting and enjoying snacks with other free software supporters? We hope you’ll be able to stop by, even if only for an hour.”

Veeranala said that what’s needed is people to pack and label GNU Press shop orders. When the call went out, they were officially looking for people to help on two days, but because the first day was today — which is kinda late notice — that leaves us with Monday August 11 between 2 pm and 5 pm. If that window doesn’t work for you, not to worry:

“If these dates don’t work for you, just drop us an email with your ability and we’ll find a time for you to help.”

The article didn’t specify an email to use, but I’m figuring that the organization’s general inquiry email — info@fsf.org — will work just fine.

There’s no pay involved, but the organization will shower you with lavish praises.

“Volunteering is an excellent way to directly support the FSF’s work, have a great time meeting other free software enthusiasts, and swap stories” Veeranala wrote. “If you volunteer, you might make some friends — and you will certainly make some memories. We will provide gratis snacks and drinks.”
